Air Freight Services: Fast, Secure Global Shipping Solutions

ng When delivery speed matters, choosing the right shipping method is critical. Whether you’re facing a production deadline, preventing costly downtime, or meeting urgent customer demands, air freight services provide the fastest and most reliable transportation option available.

What Is Air Freight?Air freight being loaded onto a cargo plane via K-loader

Air freight (also called air cargo) refers to the transportation of goods by aircraft. This task is achieved via either commercial passenger planes or dedicated cargo aircraft.

Compared to ocean freight, rail, or trucking, air freight is significantly faster – often transporting goods across continents in a matter of hours instead of days or weeks. Because of its speed and security, air freight shipping is commonly used for:

  • Time-critical shipments
  • High-value products
  • Perishable goods
  • Emergency replacement parts
  • International deliveries

When speed outweighs cost considerations, air freight is typically the best solution.

Air Freight Service Levels

When transporting freight via aircraft, there are multiple service levels available depending on urgency, budget, and shipment size.

Air Charter is the fastest but most expensive option, as one company maintains exclusive use of the entire aircraft. There is no other cargo onboard, and it offers immediate departure scheduling.

Best for: Emergency shipments, critical production parts, oversized cargo, or high-value freight.

Part Charter offers high-priority placement, but aircraft space is shared with other shippers. Cost is reduced compared to full charter, but delivery time is lengthened.

Best for: Urgent shipments that don’t require exclusive aircraft use.

Express Air Freight offers fast transit times by utilizing space on the first available commercial flight. This option is more cost-effective than charter, but immediate delivery is not guaranteed.

Best for: High-priority deliveries that need speed but not immediate departure.

Standard Air Freight is considered general air cargo service. It is less costly, but not as fast as higher-level options.

Best for: Routine shipments requiring faster delivery than ground or ocean freight.

Deferred Air Freight refers to secured space at the lowest rate available. Longer transit times are expected.

Best for: Cost-sensitive shipments that are not time-critical.

Consolidated Air Freight (“Consol”) involves multiple shipments combined into one larger load. Cargo is held until the total weight level is reached (often 1,000+ lbs.) This is the most economical air freight option.

Although slower than other air services, consolidated freight is still faster than ocean shipping.

Types of Aircraft Used in Air Freight Shipping

Air freight moves on three primary types of aircraft:

Passenger Aircraft

Typical commercial airlines carry passengers on the main deck of the aircraft, while cargo is transported in the lower deck (belly hold) alongside their luggage.

Cargo Aircraft (Freighters)

Dedicated planes designed exclusively for cargo transport. These aircraft accommodate larger, heavier, or specialized shipments.

Combi Aircraft

Aircraft that carry both passengers and cargo on the main deck.

Air Freight vs Air Cargo: Is There a Difference?

The terms air freight and air cargo are often used interchangeably. Cargo typically refers to goods transported by air or sea. Freight is broader and can refer to goods moved by air, truck, rail, or ocean. Essentially, both terms mean the same thing when referring to aircraft transportation.

Advantages of Air Freight Transportation

Speed

Air freight is the fastest shipping method available. Shipments can move internationally within hours instead of days or weeks.

Airlines operate on fixed schedules, providing predictable transit times.

Security

Airports maintain strict security controls over cargo. And with minimal handling of the cargo, the risk of damage or loss is reduced.

Reduced Warehousing Costs

Faster transit times mean less time goods are sitting in a warehouse. That equates to reduced warehousing expenses and quicker revenue turnaround from product sales.

Global Reach

Air freight provides access to nearly every major market worldwide.

Main Drawback: Cost

The primary disadvantage of air freight transportation is the higher cost compared to other shipping options. However, when you factor in avoided production shutdowns, faster order fulfillment, reduced warehousing expenses and minimized lost sales, air freight often delivers significant overall value.
